Diabetes is a condition of growing concern nationally that affects the Trenton community in a disproportionate way.
Key Facts
- In addition to the 1.5 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes each year, more than 20% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed or do not know that they have diabetes. One in four people over age 65 have diabetes.
- Prediabetes occurs when blood sugars are above normal levels but the other criteria for diagnosis have not yet been met.
- 13% of adults in Trenton have diabetes, which exceeds both the national rate of 10.8%, and the New Jersey rate of 11%, which increased from 8.8% in 2012.
- Diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in New Jersey, with nearly 2,000 deaths per year.
- The age-adjusted death rate among males is more than double the rate among females and, while the gap is narrowing, the rate among Black men is significantly higher than that of other racial/ethnic groups (39.4 deaths per 100,000 population compared to 27.7 deaths for Black women and fewer than 20 deaths for every other race/ethnicity).
